The History of CineSect?

It all started with Wanda.

Shot largely in Northeastern Pennsylvania in 1970, the only film ever made by Elia Kazan’s wife Barbara Loden finally became available on DVD in 2006. When the region two disc they ordered from France wouldn’t play in the standard player, a small group of friends huddled around a laptop to watch the cult classic.

When the film ended, discussion turned to other films that, for one reason or another, should be seen. The informal CineSect was born.

Members took turns hosting movie night in their homes. The small BYOB parties generally started and ended in the kitchen with conversation and a decadent potluck spread of hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Each evening ended with the nomination of the next film they would watch. Selections spanned the globe and ranged from highbrow, to avant-garde, to the ridiculous.

Copying this festive, spontaneous format, the film society will kick off anew at The Olde Brick Theatre in Scranton on Wednesday, May 26 with another screening of Wanda.

Proposed Schedule 2012 (subject to change)
TBA (CineSect has been on hiatus since October 2011. We're planning to return in February. Film suggestions welcome.)

Etiquette

  • Guests are encouraged to bring a beverage and a snack to share. No freeloading, please.
  • The event is free of charge. Donations accepted will benefit the cost of an MPLC film license and other expenses incurred to equip the venue and make it available for film screenings.
  • Traditionally, talking was not discouraged at CineSect house parties as long as comments pertained to the film and shared some humorous or critical insight. This is a matter that needs to be negotiated per film and among each audience depending on the nature of the film at hand. In general, CineSect is considered a social event and it is our philosophy not to take any film too seriously.
  • Nominations for the next screening will be heard following each screening and films will be selected by consensus. Members are expect to be in attendence to nominate a film.
  • Attend all the screeings or only one. CineSect is intended to be a no pressure evening. There are no officers or elections.
  • Rules of the theater (e.g. no smoking) will be enforced.
