Come to the Cabaret

(Under Construction)

While America had vaudeville, Europe had Berlin's Kabaret scene, dark and steeped in political satire.

It likewise has fueled this new generation of subversive performing artists.

Tragic Tantrum Cabaret of San Diego classifies itself as a

"Dark Cabaret band." It claims to incorporate elements of

circus, theater and cabaret to "create an enviroment that will

titiliate the senses on all levels."

Emile Autumn has labeled the style of her new concept album Opheliac as "Victorianindustrial." A violin prodigy who came to attention touring with Courtney Love, she's now backed by her own band, the Bloody Crumpets. On her website at http://www.emilieautumn.com she offers the following description of the dark, vaudeville-steeped album:

"I learnt to walk in the back stages of theatres and opera houses, amongst the beautiful chaos of costume changes, circus performers, sweaty ballerinas, dripping make-up, and far too much glitter. Then, I went mad and was locked up. This is simply what it sounds like inside my head."

Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls

“if you think i’m going to pass up a chance to put my hat back down in front of the collected audience on my virtual sidewalk and ask them to give their hard-earned money directly to me instead of to roadrunner records, warner music group, ticketmaster, and everyone else out there who’s been shamelessly raping both fan and artist for years, you’re crazy.

… taking my stand as a virtual street performer is the best thing that’s happened to my career and i revel in it.
and i love bringing people along for the ride.

i believe in the future of cheap art, creative enterprise, and an honorable public who will put their money where there mouth is, or rather, their spare change where their heart is.”

L.A's Lucient Dossier is one of the pretties troupes performing today. The company includes jesters and clowns, burlesque dancers, aerial artists, dire dancers, belly dancers, contortionists, stilt walkers, jugglers, sward swallowers, and its own tribal orchestra. More popular than ever stunning crowds at the annual Coachella festival, its Cabinet of Curiosities show has been seen Wednesdays at H.Wood in late 2009.

Promo material for the show reads:

"Let the night take you away and if you please, sip some magic with the Elixir Man, receive an uplifting oracle reading, warm your soul next to the vagabond fire, allow yourself to unwind on the dance floor .  What Lucent does best is create wonderlands for our guests to lose themselves in, so let us be your guide into a fantastical realm where brilliance and insanity fuse together in an exotic kind of ecstatic bliss.  There are plenty of toasty heaters and body heat rising dancers to keep you warm!"

I include variety shows such as Sxip's Hour of Charm here which are perhaps more cabaret than they are punk. The truth is, I could put composer/musician Sxip Shirey on almost every page of this site. Do follow him on twitter if you're not already. He's not only ridiciously talented, he's a professor of NOW and the very essence of creative innovation. He funded his latest album through donations collected via Kickstarter.com.

Loving this clip of deleted footage of Count Olaf's Theatre Troupe

from the A Series of Unfortunate Events movie.
